Is Rafa willing to let Xabi Alonso join Real Madrid for €40,000,000?

Hot off the presses in Madrid, comes a story which is going to pique the interest of Liverpool fans across the globe; that Alonso and Rafa Benitez are going to have a Soprano’s style “Sit Down” this week to determine the future of the Spanish maestro.  The story comes from AS, which means we can assume that if Real did not sign off on the article itself, they’ve provided the information and are happy with what the article says.

The article claims that Alonso spoke with the coaching staff at Real this week, who asked him to join them.  What’s interesting is that the article contains no specific mention of Alonso’s response to the offer, beyond his reply to the television media, that he doesn’t know where he’ll be next season.

What is said specifically is that the offer met with ’stiff posture’ from Benitez, and he is willing to sell, but for the princely sum of  €40,000,000.  What makes this price slightly less appealing for the Anfield faithful is that Alonso has a significant sell on clause in his contract, so that somethng in the order of 20% of his fee will go straight to the coffers of Real Sociedad – his previous club.  Real want to only spend €24 million, but believe a compromise can be reached for around €35 million.  The article indicates that Liverpool would also find this fee acceptable, although it seems pretty duibious that the Reds would release and information to AS.

Liverpool fans, what would you do?  Do you think €40,000,000 is a good deal for Alonso. or would they have to prise him out of your cold, dead hands?

As a Liverpool fan I would do anything to stop Alonso leaving. He was arguably our best player last season and, with Mascherano, he is vital to the way the team is operating currently.
Plus, if Shitiano Ronaldo is worth £80m, Xabi is definately worth more like £50m or £60m!

What would you do with that £50 million if you were Mr Benitez?

no way .. i can’t see alonso leave .. it would be a massive loss and a step backward .. he’s the pass master! irreplacable!

Apparently Alonso’s response to the offer was ‘I don’t know what will happen. The clubs now have to negotiate.’ and insisted that a “transfer was not impossible” though apparently the 2 clubs can’t agree on a fee. (This makes a lot of sense if a) benitez is setting the bar really high because hhe doesn’t want to let Alonso go, and b) if he did he’d have to shell out 20% to his old club!

Also apparently the offer was £55million combined bid for Alonso, Javier Mascherano and Alvaro Arbeloa which Benitez strongly denies would ever happen. GOOD!

  5. Daily Football Transfer Rumours Dot Com Says:

Alonso has apparently given his agent a deadline of the 19th of July to sort out a deal with Real, which is (interestingly) a day before the 20% sell on clause expires.

There will be more on this over the next few weeks.
