When we last covered this rumour, our assesment was that there was not much doing here; that it was likely the results of City’s quixotic quest to buy every single forward in the world and Eto’o’s agents trying to make some money by horse trading their prize asset.

Subsequent to those initial rumours, City have put their money where their mouth is and offered Barcelona £25,000,000 and offered Eto’o a staggering £250,000 per week.  City seemed so confident about landing their prize that they began speaking to the press about how Eto’o was going to be renting out Freddie Flintoff’s digs in Hale.

However sadly for City, it seems Eto’o is still not that keen, he would rather finish his contract at Barca and leave for a free at the end of this season.

Somewhat confusingly, the Beeb reported Eto’o’s agent saying the following, last night on Spanish Radio ONA FM

“If there is not a 180-degree turnaround then he will stay with Barcelona,”

Perhaps double negatives are more poetic in Spanish.

It says alot about the nature of the game, and the way things are being run at City that they’re willing to spend so much money on yet another forward.  Currently they have

  • Robinho
  • Santa Cruz
  • Bellamy
  • Craig Bellamy
  • Benjani
  • Valeri Bojinovn
  • Caicedo

Yet they’re still willing to spend another £25,000,000 on yet another forward.  How are all of these people going to play together, and who is going to pay money for players that can’t make the grade.
