Nemanja Vidic to Barcelona

Can you see Nemanja Vidic at the Camp Nou next year?

Can you see Nemanja Vidic at the Camp Nou next year?

It’s clear why Barcelona want Vidic, their defence is rubbish. In spite of all the hype that Puyol has garnered, he’s limited positionally and a midget, Marquez is OK, and Pique is not particularly good. Barça have managed to score a shitload of goals and not conceed by not giving the ball away. This tactic is fine for La Liga, but in the champions league, playing against Didier Drogba and the like, they need a backline with a bit more steel. There was interest mooted for Daniel Agger, but that has dissipated since the Dane signed a new contract at Liverpool.

So if you’re the best team in the world, you’ve got the best forward line and midfield in the world, you go for the best defender in the world. The interest is completely understandable, although Barca would have to pay a fairly outrageous fee to convince Fergie to sell.

The issue is going to be getting the player interested. His agent Silvano Martina, doesn’t think that it’s going to be possible to pursuade the big Serb to leave:

“[Vidic] loves it in Manchester and Italian clubs cannot afford to buy him, nor can Spanish ones for that matter,

“He still has several years left on his contract and is settled there.

“He is European and (club) world champion, why would he want to leave? Every other destination

Indeed. But as Kevin Keegan once said, football, it’s a funny old game.

Barça’s defense still rubbish? Tell that to EPL Champions Manchester United… although they held 47% possession during this weeks Champion’s League Final, they somehow were unable to put the ball in the back of the net. As far as Chelsea are concerned, from what I remember the only reason their possession was so low during the semi-finals is that they parked at the back and cleared the ball up field every chance they had. Controversy or not, I would think the likes of Drogba, Ronaldo, Rooney, Berbatov, Tevez, Anelka, Lampard, etc. would be able to put in at least one goal against a rubbish defense. It seems highly unlikely that between the two teams they were only able to manage a lucky Essien strike over a three game period against a rubbish defense… it also seems that you, among thousands of Manchester United fans, did not watch one La Liga game this season and completely underestimated just how good Barça were this year.

That’s a bit glib. Barcelona are an amazing team, but Marquez, Puyol, Pique et al are not the best defenders in the world. You’re right that they defend successfully by keeping the ball which is an admirable and beautiful way to play, but my point is if they’re looking to improve their team, an obvious place to improve would be the defence (and goalkeeper).

  3. Mike Says:

No glibber than calling Barça’s defense rubbish… sure they could use some improvement, but rubbish? Come on…

  4. Daily Football Transfer Rumours Dot Com Says:

When you have the best team in the world, by some significant margin, who have a back 4 (Alves accepted) who wouldn’t be first choice defenders at second tier premier league team (say, Fulham, Everton etc), it’s not glib to call them rubbish. Calling someone a Man U fan because they don’t rate Barcelona’s defence is glib.

  5. Mike Says:

Ok… we can agree that Barcelona’s defense could use a little beefing up given the age of some of the players, but saying that Puyol, Marquez, Piqué or Abidal wouldn’t start at a second tier premier league team is a bit presumptuous. And just to clarify, I didn’t mean to directly call you a Man U fan… I meant you, along with the thousands of Man U fans… not that you were necessarily a Man U fan… but now I’m just being petty. Bottom line is I think “if they’re looking to improve their team, an obvious place to improve would be the defence” is a bit more accurate than calling them rubbish. Maybe I’m just a biased Barcelona fan…

Point taken, but if articles were written in such a measured, balanced tone, they’d be terribly boring, no?

Thanks for your comments BTW, love to hear peoples opinion.

  7. Benang Says:

Haha, Barca’s defense is rubbish? I haven’t heard anything funnier in ages. Not only most of the defenders are regulars at their national teams (even Pique in that matter), but IMHO this season Barca’s defense is the best defense I’ve ever seen so far. I personally think that Puyol was the MoM in Champions League Final instead of Messi. He’s all over the place both defensively and offensively (even to the point of making CR7 frustrated). And you call that a hype? Come on man. Hype is making Vidic Player of The Year when he can’t do shit against Barca.

I agree that if articles were written in such a measured, balanced tone, they’d be terribly boring. But it sure as hell will be an objective one, no?

Lastly, I would have to agree with you about how the goalie (that’s you, Valdes) sucks big time. Although he sometimes works wonders, he makes blunders as often. I think they should try to sign Buffon instead.

Oh yeah, I forgot, I’m one of the Barcelona fans (also Puyol is my fave player). So you see why I rather pissed of at this article.

  8. Daily Football Transfer Rumours Dot Com Says:

Ha, it’s funny that 1 small remark about Barcenlona’s defence causes a whole lot more controversy than a whole article calling Ronaldo an asshole.

Spain’s defence isn’t particularly great either, they rely on an amazing midfield (the Barca midfield) to control the game, much like Barca.

If you noticed that the article was written quite a while before the champions league final, when Vidic had only been made to look like a fool once by Fernando Torres. What has been interesting is that the only time he’s played against fast, skillful forwards, he’s been rubbish. Maybe he’s been found out? Not sure. But apart from those games he’s looked imperious. Don’t put too much significance on the player of the year award.

It’s surprising that you think that Puyol was MOM, didn’t think he was that great beyond running about a lot, particularly with the magnificent performance of Messers Xavi and Iniesta.

Buffon is an excellent goalkeeper, but Barca must be kicking themselves that the let Pepe Reina go, his ability to organise defences plus his movement off the line is second to none.

    Thanks for your comments again.

  9. kj Says:

Obviously some people appreciate Barca’s style of play more than others. The defense is probably not as intense as a defense in the EPL, but you don’t need to run like a wild race horse when you’re as skillful as these guys. Watch Barcelona play, they win the ball on the second tackle…its not a weakness, its the way they organize and play.
And by the way, that defense won the treble this year, the first team in spain to do that…might I remind you Vidic was the one who was cut up like some onions by Eto’o when he scored the first goal. Now that’s a great defense right? HA!

    Good point…

  11. Benang Says:

“Ha, it’s funny that 1 small remark about Barcenlona’s defence causes a whole lot more controversy than a whole article calling Ronaldo an asshole.”

Well, maybe it’s because lots of people agree that he is an asshole. I know I did :D .

I think it’s not that Barca’s defense is crap, but rather their playing style makes it crap. With an ultra offensive football and a pretty wide gap between the defense line and the midfield, it’s obvious that they would have a hard time defending. Not to mention the two wing backs (and occasionally center back) actively attacking and a shitty goalie. Thank God the wing backs are superb in both offense or defense. I still remember the days when the all attacking crap defending Sergi Barjuan was still around. The trophy-dry seasons of Barcelona.

I myself is a back when I played with my colleagues. So it’s pretty obvious that I value good markings, tacklings, or positional tactics of a back rather than solo runs, feints, shootings, etc. I pay more attention to the defenders more than the rest of the crew. And I’d say that Puyol has done his job superbly. He has a tenacity of a beast and he marks his designated opponents quite well. Not to mention that he also move forward a lot with 2 chances of scoring goals if MU’s goalie was not VDS. So, yeah, I think the MoM should be split between Messi and him.

I agree, selling Pepe Reina was a big-big mistake. With Reina’s performance in Villareal, they should’ve declined the transfer offer. Damn Van Gaal!
