Gareth Barry to Manchester City
Tuesday, 06. 2. 2009 – Category: Aston Villa, Manchester City, Premier League
It seems that Gareth Barry is in talks, no having a medical for Manchester City. So much for realising his dream of playing in the Champions League. The repercussions of this move are likely to colour the rest of the transfer season. Firstly, it makes the Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid rumours even less likely, and the articles that link Liverpool with Stephane Sessagnon and Javi Martinez, if true are red herrings, these two are not likely to replace existing first choice players Alonso and Mascherano, but instead add depth to the Liverpool squad, and help them build for the future.
It also means Villa are likely to move for Standard Liege midfielder Steven Dufour to replace Barry. It also more than likely means that City’s initial moves towards Miguel Veloso are likely to be ended.
More importantly, it sets a tone for the rest of the transfer window, where players who have previously only wanted to move for clubs in the champions league will move to City for a big pay packet. To quote the surprisingly eloquent Fernando Torres
“Big players want to win trophies and Manchester City is not even in the race for trophies in England. They are fighting to stay in the Premier League, or to get to the middle of the table.
“They have to build from there and then go against the biggest clubs and after that, maybe, a top player will join them.
It must be depressing as a player to intentionally sacrafice ambition for money, it seems that this will happen a few more times before this window shuts.
