Are there any clubs not interested in signing Gareth Barry?

Up until this weekend, it seemed to be a Fait Accompli that the rumours pointing Mr G. Barry in the direction of Anfield were finally coming to fruition. Sadly, it seems that this massively drawn out saga is not going to come to a close any time soon. It used to be a monogamous relationship, but now other teams have started flashing a bit of thigh in Barry’s direction, no longer just Liverpool, Spurs, Man City and even AC Milan have come to the conclusion that Barry is a saucy piece of midfield action, and they want to get their end in.

These clubs also seem willing to meet Villa’s ridiculus £10 million asking price for the England midfielder, which is a sticking point for Benitez. This is a lot of money to pay for a 29 year old with only 12 months left on his contract. That being said, we are talking about a club who paid £3 million for a 31 year old Emile Heskey, with only 6 months left on his contract, so the appreciation of value coming from Villa park might be slightly skewed.

What is amusing about the offers from Spurs and Manhester City, is that the reason Barry has given for want to leave is to play in the Champions League, something that neither club can offer, indeed they both finished more than 10 points below Villa this season. The Milan interest is intriguing, but they can’t guarantee a Champions League position either.

What this really means is that Martin O’Neill and Randy Lerner now have something to bargain with, to extract the maximum amount of money for their player.
