Xabi Alonso has made it on to Carlo Ancelotti's shopping list for Chelsea

In a truly bizarre sequence of events, Carlo Ancelotti has released his autobiography that contains chapters about how he’s going to be the new manager of Chelsea.  Indeed the first chapter is called “Called up by Abramovich – the beginnings”.  A ballsy move by any standards, but then he goes on to detail a conversation he had with Abramowicz:

“I go to meet him one floor up. He’s waiting in a conference room and has the same people he had in Geneva sat around the table. I immediately make one thing clear.

“I have a contract with Milan, I’m very well there, and an eventual agreement with Chelsea can only happen if Milan is also in agreement”.

‘Again we only talked about football. How would I make Chelsea play in case they got me as a manager?

“President, your team is very physical, you have to put more quality in the middle of the pitch,” I tell him. I gave him two names, Franck Ribery and Xabi Alonso. Players that would have made him very happy.

The man might have a future at Stamford bridge, if he’s willing to slap his nads on the table in this way.

Nevertheless let’s focus on the rumours.

Alonso would definitely complement Chelsea, they have a plethora of water carriers and attacking central midfielders, but no one with the quality to dictate the tempo of the game that Alonso possesses.  Rafa seems to be pretty adamant that Alonso is not for sale, and it’s difficult to believe that Chelsea could buy Alonso unless it was out of Rafa’s cold dead hands.

Ribery is another one who would definitely add a lot of quality to the Chelsea side, however it seems he’s on his way to Barca.

What is interesting about these two rumours is that in spite of the relatively low likelihood of either of these transfers coming to fruition is that it gives us some insight into the direction that Ancelotti plans to take Chelsea next season. We can expect less big physical players, and more players with skills on the ball.  With the addition of a few such players, Chelsea would have a fearsome squad.
