What they need
With Martin Laursen forced to retire due to a knee injury, Villa are in desparate need of a commanding centre half to lead their back line. Their squad is paper thin, so they need to strengthen in ever area across the pitch. They will also need a central midfielder to replace their departed captain, Gareth Barry.

What they don’t need
Everyone really, although Nicky Shorey doesn’t seem to get a lot of playing time these days. Really they need all hands on deck this season, if they want to mount a sustained top 4 challenge as well as a reasonable attempt at the Euro Vase. It remains to be seen whether they’ll need to cash in on one of their remaining stars (Ashley Young) in order to flesh out the Villa squad.
