Is Daniele De Rossi Pep Guardiola's Plan B for Barca?

Is Daniele De Rossi Pep Guardiola's Plan B for Barca?

Well, you learn something new every day, via this handy translation site, we’ve learned that Guardiola means ‘Piggy Bank’ in Spanish, hah. We’ve also learned that Mr Piggy Bank’s not feeling that there’s a strong likelihood that Javier Mascherano won’t be pulling on his socks at Camp Nou next season, and consequently he’s looking to alternatives, specifically in the form of Roma’s Daniele De Rossi.

Now, this may be outright lies, and the story has not been picked up anywhere else, but El Mundo Deportivo is one of the newspapers that functions as an mouthpiece for Barca, in the same way that Marca performs that function to Real Madrid. As such, we may make some assumptions that at least someone in the club wants the public to think that De Rossi is a target.

Liverpool have been fairly unequivocal in their statements that Mascherano is not for sale, and given he still has 3 years left on his contract, their doesn’t seem to be any reason to sell him, assuming he is happy at ‘Pool, which Fernando Torres seems to think he is.

What makes it interesting is what the article says about the reason for choosing De Rossi, instead of Mascherano, is that Guardiola is looking to add more ‘power’ to his central midfield. That certainly makes sense, however Mascherano and De Rossi have fairly different games. Mascherano, while being a physical powerhouse, is an out and out defensive midfielder, De Rossi, on the other hand plays a little more like the Steven Gerrard of yore, playing box to box, tackling, running shooting etc.  This will be an interesting year to watch Barca for neutrals and fans alike, Guardiola has set himself a pretty high benchmark.

The article then goes on to suggest that De Rossi has been on the radar of Barca since the days of Frank Rijkaard, and suggests that the financial certainty surrounding Roma, plus their poor showing in Serie A last year (6th) might make De Rossi ripe for the plucking.

Do you think this is a smart move by the Barca manager?

Hope this is true, I’d be gutted if Mascherano left Liverpool, not sure we could cope without him.

He would be a great loss to any team, and a big asset to any team. Still mysteriously underrated, presumably by people who only watch Match of the Day.
